It is a sharp, hollow stainless steel needle that is inserted into a patient's vein to facilitate the placement of a flexible plastic cannula. Once the plastic cannula is correctly positioned in the vein, this needle is withdrawn and discarded, leaving the soft catheter in place for fluid or medication administration.
